The EDTECH 541 course was enjoyable course experienced that helped me gain knowledge and skills that are critical to both my academic success and my professional career as an Educational Technologist. As a result of taking this course I became more comfortable at integrating technology into core content coursework. Prior to taking this class I had only planned lessons for technology applications and computer programming classes. I have also grown more confident in my ability to recognize the relative advantage of incorporating technology into lessons. This will serve me well moving forward in my job as an Educational Technology Coach.
The work that I created for this course was guided primarily by constructivist theory. I became more comfortable with identifying ways to create lessons that provided students with an opportunity to express their voice and choice. I now have a better understanding of the importance of authentic learning experiences and I will always check to make sure that the lessons I design provide an authentic learning experience for students.
I was most challenged by the social media unit. I haven't used social media much in the classroom except for edmodo. the week spent learning about integrating social media into the classroom and the research that we did on the "Walled Gardens" blog assignment got me excited about integrating social media into the classroom. I will start that by being more active on social media myself.
The coursework also addressed some of the AECT standards. Specifically, the coursework encompassed AECT standards for Design, Development, and Utilization. I have included information below from my final course project that explains the specific standards in more detail.
Standard 1, the Design standard was present throughout every project created that appears on the final class website.
Standards 1.1 Instructional Systems Design, 1.2 Message Design, 1.3 Instructional Design, and 1.4 Learner Characteristics were exhibited frequently throughout the course. Each artifact that was created required an analysis of that which was to be learned and the process for the learning was also established in the coursework. Artifacts had to be designed in a way that was easy for others to understand them so that they could engage with the content. In order to do this effectively I had to determine the most appropriate model for instruction to my desired audience.
Standard 2, the Development standard was also frequently used in this course. Evidence of this can be seen in the artifacts that I created which are designed to meet specific learning objectives.
Standards 2.1 Print Technologies, 2.2 Audiovisual Technologies, 2.3 Computer-Based Technologies, and 2.4 Integrated Technologies were exhibited often and can be seen in the coursework. The artifacts that were created for this course include interactive content that includes customized text, graphics, banners, audio, computer-assisted instruction, telecommunications, and web pages embedded with audio and video.
Standard 3, the Utilization standard was also displayed throughout the course. Evidence of this standard can be seen in the artifacts that were created each week as well as in the blog posts that were written.
Standards 3.1 Media Utilization, 3.2 Diffusion of Innovations were present in the coursework and evidence in their application can be seen in the coursework. The artifacts were designed and implemented with thoughtful attention to the lesson requirements, delivery, audience, objective, and standards. At times in the course we were also asked to determine the Relative Advantage of using technology to teach a concept. Once we were asked to blog about making a change to loosen the restrictions on students’ access to social media in schools.
The EDTEch 541 class was a valuable course that provided me with considerable knowledge and enhanced my skills. I feel fortunate to have been able to participate in the class.
